Juneteenth in Oregon

In Oregon, the Juneteenth Oregon Celebration was founded 45 years ago by the late and beloved community leader Clara Peoples. The celebration of Juneteenth Oregon dates back to 1945 when Peoples introduced the tradition from Muskogee, Oklahoma, to her co-workers at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland. Upon moving to Portland in 1945, Clara Peoples was surprised to learn that the Juneteenth holiday was unknown in this part of the country. She introduced the holiday to her co-workers at the Kaiser Shipyards during their break being the first Juneteenth Celebration in Oregon.

Later Clara helped to initiate Portland’s annual citywide Juneteenth celebration in 1972. Juneteenth Oregon’s celebration usually starts with a parade, followed by the festivities which includes live music and entertainment, art, food, educational booths, cultural booths, community resources and a children’s play area. The 2020 event will all be virtual due to the COVID-9 pandemic.

  • Comprehensive Plan Update – Public Hearing continued at June 16 City Council meeting – Public comments continue to be accepted

Learn more about this meeting at www.milwaukieoregon.gov/citycouncil/city-council-regular-session-278.

Note: If you would like to provide comment please be sure to read the section at the link about how to do so.

About the Comprehensive Plan Update:

Following nearly two years of work and community input, the Milwaukie Planning Commission recommended approval of the updated Comprehensive Plan policy document at their March 10 public hearing. Oral testimony was taken at both the January 14 and January 28 meetings, before the testimony portion of the hearing was closed and commissioners began their discussion and deliberation. Planning Commission continued their deliberation at their February 11 and February 25 meetings, before making their recommendation on March 10.

The public now has another opportunity to provide feedback on the plan in advance of the City Council’s public hearing. The Council has heard comment and testimony during public hearings on June 2 and June 9. They will continue to receive both written and verbal comments at their next Council hearing on June 30. Public comments will be accepted at any time prior to the June 30 meeting, as well as during the public testimony portion of the June 30 hearing. However, if you would like a staff response to your comments as part of the Council’s meeting packet, please submit comments by June 25

  • Ways to Help During COVID-19 – DONATE – Map of Organizations Collecting and Distributing Resources to the Community & Donation Tips

The impacts of COVID-19 have many county residents and families experiencing hardship, leading to a range of needs for both food and non-food items such as hygiene, cleaning, and childcare supplies.

In response to the growing requests and needs in our community, the Clackamas County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) hopes to leverage organizations already managing donation collection and distribution through a coordinated system that will help meet the needs of our most vulnerable populations.

The organizations listed on this map are currently collecting and distributing resources to the community in response to COVID-19. These organizations need help to meet the needs of the community. Your donation to the organization of your choice will increase the ability of the organization to help your community.

  • Arts Committee Winter Performance Series Online Tomorrow Featuring Red Yarn – Sat., June 20 (4 p.m.) on Facebook Live

This show was part of the Chapel Theatre’s Winter Performance Series in partnership with the Milwaukie Arts Committee, but was rescheduled and moved to an online version due to COVID-19.

Red Yarn (aka Andy Furgeson) is a Texas-born, Oregon-based family performer who weaves folk songs and puppetry into high-energy shows for all ages. With his engaging performances, lush folk-rock recordings, and playful music videos, this red-bearded bard reinvigorates American folklore for younger generations.

With traditional and original songs that apply an indie aesthetic to old time, blues, country and classic rock’n’roll, Red Yarn’s sound is both rooted and modern. Whether performing solo, with his wife and singing partner Jessie, or with a full band, Red Yarn’s shows are a raucous, inclusive celebration of the multicultural musical heritage of the USA. As Red rambles through the landscapes of American folklore, from the Deep Woods to the Old Barn, he introduces his “critter” friends – lovable, handmade puppets – along the way.

  1. Johnson Creek Watershed Council Community Engagement Series – Inside the Hive – June 24 at 7 p.m. – Join the event virtually on Facebook or Zoom

Inside the Hive: Wasps and Bees of the Pacific Northwest

Have you ever wondered what goes on inside the hive? We are diving into the world of social wasps and bees of the Pacific Northwest, from beloved bumblebees to often-despised yellowjackets. We’ll be learning about the differences between our local species, their exciting life histories, and the unique ecological roles they play. Plus, we’ll have plenty of stories from our day-to-day work hanging out with bugs and getting stung in the process.

Roby Ventres-Pake and Ariel Devros are biologists, beekeepers, educators, and co-owners of Portland Natural Bee Removal (PNBR). Through PNBR they work to help people understand and live alongside stinging insects, while relocating bees to new homes and removing wasps without the use of pesticides.

This live talk is a part of Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s Community Engagement Series. All talks are free of cost and will be recorded.
